HUGIN EXPERT was founded 30 years ago today on October 24th, 1989.
HUGIN is the spin-off of an EU-funded project to aid doctors in diagnosing nerve and muscle diseases. To overcome uncertainty in diagnosis, an expert system, MUNIN, was built based on Causal Probabilistic Networks (CPNs). These artificial intelligence methods were taken to the next level by Professor Steffen L. Lauritzen of Aalborg University in Denmark, and David Spiegelhalter of Cambridge University when they published the algorithm HUGIN (Handling Uncertainty in General Inference Networks) in 1988.
In 1989 the HUGIN tool was commercialized and HUGIN EXPERT was born. Today HUGIN EXPERT A/S is a leading provider of software for reasoning and decision making under uncertainty based on Bayesian Networks. HUGIN software technology has been used by global players in more than 45 countries to create state of the art applications for decision analysis, decision support, health diagnosis, fraud detection, risk evaluation, safety assessment, trouble-shooting, food safety, forensic identification and more.
The spirit of innovation that helped create the company 30 years ago will continue to inform HUGIN EXPERT as it evolves as a global technology leader for many years to come.
